Are You and Your Baby Struggling With Colic?
If so, we’re here to help.
Born Free is leading an ongoing initiative aimed at educating expectant and new moms about colic—a condition that often confuses and concerns parents. We have declared March as Colic Awareness Month and started this forum to provide caregivers with support and suggestions to help reduce colic symptoms. Our Born Free® Feeding System aids in reducing colic symptons.
To learn how colic affects moms, a recent 2013 study* interviewed 150 first-time expectant moms and 100 moms with colicky babies. The goal of the study was to determine moms awareness and feelings surrounding colic, and in the case of those moms with colicky babies, how it has affected their lives.
80% of moms with colicky babies felt a baby's bottle played a moderate or significant role in helping to ease symptoms of colic.
80% of moms with colicky babies said that colic has moderately or significantly affected their ability to leave the house at some point.
79% of first-time expectant moms are somewhat, very, or extremely concerned about having a baby with colic.
79% of moms with colicky babies are hesitant to ask friends or family for help, yet 90% of moms with colicky babies would be willing to help another mom in need.
66% of moms with colicky babies report a moderate or significant impact on their relationship with a partner.
The concensus was that most moms are aware of colic, and are concerned about having a baby with colic. Most first-time expectant moms and those moms with colicky babies also felt a baby's bottle could help soothe a baby with colic. It's also clear based on the study that colic affects the whole family, yet most moms are hesitant to ask for help. Therefore, we are encouraging all moms to reach out and lend a helping hand to another new mom in need of a little support. Whether their newborn is suffering from colic, or not, a cup of coffee, a home cooked meal, or allowing them to take a peaceful shower while you watch the baby will be so very appreciated. While no one can cure colic, there are some things you can do to help manage it. In addition to the five S’s (swaddling, side/stomach holding, shushing, swinging, and sucking), there are some new, innovative products that can help soothe your baby. One of these is the Born Free Feeding System with its ActiveFlow® Venting Technology.
In a 2012 study, 100 moms with colicky babies switched from their current bottle system to Born Free for one week. Their experiences were pretty interesting:
100% of the moms reported that Born Free helped ease their baby's colic symptoms.
100% of the moms said they would continue to use Born Free to feed their baby even after the study was over.
More than 90% of participating moms rated Born Free as “excellent” or “good” for helping reduce some of baby’s colic symptoms.
In fact, moms reported that Born Free rated significantly stronger for helping with all colic symptoms compared to their current bottle system. And they gave high marks to Born Free for functional bottle attributes, including ease of use, overall bottle quality, ease of holding bottle, ease of assembly, and ease of cleaning.
What Else Can You Try? There are a number of natural ways you can care for and soothe your colicky baby. And while taking care of baby, remember that it’s just as important to care of yourself.
